This is what I realized when I watched this movie. The sledgehammer wouldn't even break the portal, it would just go through it! Error on the developers part.

maybe sunset knew that the hammer would pass through. and the reason why she decided to not do it wasn't because she wanted to take Equestrian, but because if Twiight knew the hammer wouldn't broke the portal, she would not have a good reason to give the crown away.
