Considering Sunset never intended to destroy the portal to begin with, I think that Sunset was just hoping that Twilight would be dumb enough to fall for the bluff and think that the portal would be broken.
Sunset had already shown that she thought Twilight was stupid, when Twilight admitted to not knowing what would happen if an element of harmony was used in another world. And let's face it, Twilight WAS dumb enough to believe that the sledgehammer would break the portal rather than go through it. So it seems as though Sunset actually had a good plan there.
