It's not a plothole. If the portal is linked to a physical object, the statue, than destroying the statue itself would destroy the portal. She would just have to attack the area around the portal.

The portal is attacked to a physical object. The mirror on Equestria;s side, and a statue on the human world. Destroying the statue would destroy the portal, so it's not a plothole.

I just looked at the scene in the movie. Sunset is holding the hammer up high, so she might hit the top of the statue pedestal. Since she didn't actually try to swing it we don't know what would have happened.
