In the book, before they reach the castle of King Haggard, Schmendrick relates to the Unicorn the tale of a unicorn stallion turned human by a wizard.

Yep! I've read the novel as well as the comic book adaptation of it. I'm not sure unicorns having beards (or just exclusively stallions) was ever confirmed, but it was fun to draw all the same (:

Right, I should have clarified (this is why you shouldn't check your inbox right before falling asleep) that I was also thinking of the depiction in the tLU comic book adaptation. But they are fun to draw. Brings out the leonine qualities of the unicorn most people forget.

I had the honor of meeting Peter S. Beagle at NYCC and having him sign my hard copy. It sits very proudly on my shelf.

That's wonderful! I got a signed copy of the recent Unicorn Anthology he edited, but have yet to meet him in person. It's still a life goal for me~
