Description This is Beth again, a little older this time. A most difficult painting - the heavy contrast is really difficult in watercolour. This is 8" by 10". There's a penciled measuring line floating above her head - glad I noticed that before I matted it.

The watermark seriously obscured her face, so I removed it - please don't swipe my work. ^_^

Thank you so much! I've been doing a lot of portraits lately - not as many people as last year, but people are harder than dogs anyway.

Thanks! Quite a challenge, this one. You're right, she was an adorable child - I always like painting pictures of kids. ^_^

Like you, I also like to paint children, and animals But you paint...everything with ease. I'm a bit nervous with landscapes

Oh, no. I actually paint while swearing quietly to myself and thinking I ought to just throw the paints in the garbage.

Thanks, David! I wouldn't have even attempted this one if it hadn't been for the example set by - those really heavy shadows are something 'm just not used to painting. Glad you think it works well! ^_^

I think it worked very well Chris, i watch watrcolour artists on tv and it always amazes me how it brings the painting into 3D as soon as they drop the shaow in

That's certainly true - I've gotten a lot more bold with shadows over the years; if they're approached without trepidation, they can really give a painting a lot more depth.

I think it's something i need to work at with my drawings too, it's funny because when i'm drawing they always seem to be right then once i put them on DA i always seem to look at them and think "mabe i should or could have went darker"

theancientofdays In reply to Dabull04 [2008-11-14 01:40:51 +0000 UTC]

That happens to me with almost every deviation. I try too hard to to impress my fellows in DA, and go out of my way to get the best image I can. I spend a lot of time thinking, "I should have changed that" or "The colours here aren't quite right..."

Well it was pointed out to me that i had missed the lashes on kates right eye and to be honest i hadn't even noticed but i can't be bothered to go back to it and rescan it

I suppose with something that detailed, you're ound to miss something here and there occasionally! Interesting coincidence - I missed the lashed on the right side of "Symmetry Exercise" the other day. Hmm... Great minds thinking alike again, I guess.

Thank you very much! I was a little worried about this one at first because of the contrast, but the more I look at it, the happier I am with it.

Wow! Thanks very much! This one was really hard because I wanted to make it look like the reference photo, and the heavy shadows are tough to get right. I particularly wanted to make the eye on the left noticeable and balanced. Glad you like it! ^_^

You did an excellent job with the lighting - very well done. I am very impressed with the skin tones - not easy at all with watercolour - I have had many failed attempts recently. Excellent work.

Thank you very much! Gee, I almost didn't post it. Have you ever worked on something so long and hard that no matter what you do to it, you never really feel that it's quite right? This is one of those.
