You mean Crona's gender? I don't think so. I guess the author left it open for imagination. Thou in original manga Crona is a girl. But I don't mind if people prefer her to be a boy.

When it comes to pets, they are great to have around for most people with mental issues, which I guess Crona would have after years of abuse.

Actually the creator of Soul Eater never specified Crona's gender and maintained the fact that it was unknown even post-series. (here's a source from after the manga ended: twitter.com/Atsushi_Ohkubo/sta… )

I have no idea where the rumors that their gender was ever specified in the manga came from, but it was likely due to fan translators going off their own personal opinions and not providing a translation note/explanation as to why they were doing that. (though I know Funimation's poor translation decisions with the anime were the reason why a lot of people still erroneously think Crona's canonically a boy even over ten years after the anime's airing)

Atsushi Ohkubo (Soul Eater's creator) confirmed on his Twitter in 2015 that Crona's gender was always unknown. Nothing to contradict that has been officially said since.
