Hey well, it's never too late to take a few classes huh? I'm sure with your natural talent learning from a professional would produce crazy-good art work

I think you've done a great job here Tim. The red umbrella contrasts really well with the grey tones of the figure and you've managed to keep good tonal values in there too. I think it would have been a good challenge if you'd have attempted the floral lace garment over her shoulders, but still an excellent piece

Yeah I went back and forth with that but I just couldnt pull enough detail from it for my liking and I could find any other references that I thought I could compare enough to "merge" the less detailed spots. I tried to give myself the challenge for not having the reference be HQ. (and I really liked the pose - I almost didnt start this one because I knew Id get frustrated on parts of it being muddy when trying to find landmarks in the referecne. ) Its a great stock though and its owner was very helpful in the process, (You already know I attempted to ask about the possiblity of a higher quality reference. )
Im usually lazy with clothing but ill try to be alittle more structured and really attempt to render it. (if you check out my ethan II drawing, I was going to finish alot more of the sweater but I didnt want the drawing to take forever.)

Yes, always difficult when the reference image doesn't show enough detail to reproduce to an acceptable level.
Your Ethan picture seems to have just the right amount of his jumper so as not to detract from his portrait. I get bored doing clothing and have a tendency to rush it to get it over with.

Personally, I love this. Proportionally everything seems correct, and the umbrella is absolutely lovely too. Beautiful color of red, but black, white and red are very refined and classy colors, you can't go wrong there. The only thing that seems just a bit strange is her face. Her eye seems kinda blacked out and her lips are very, very small. Her eyebrow is almost cartoon like as well. But, I can't see the original and sometimes, that is just the way people look. I had a teacher (who is an artist by profession), said that when he draws people, he changes the way they look just a little bit to make them more appealing. Faces are hard, but with your obvious skill and talent, you can definitely overcome this quickly with a bit of practice. Well, I hope my critique was constructive. Contrary to my art on this deviant art, I'm actually fairly decent realist when I want to be.

Yeah sometimes I will make edits but this reference is very muddy when you try to pull any details out of it. my eyes can elaborate but I like having decent quality in the reference to compare with. If you look at my drawing "Lost" Ive done a bit of what you suggested there. Thank you for the critique. I took this as a challenge because I knew I couldnt grab all of the details from the reference like Id normally like too. Its not as polished as I'd like but im fairly happy with it.
