Very nice tutorial. Do you paint wet on wet? And which reds, yellows, and blues are you using?

thanks!
yes I do, to blend in colours. I use wet on dry when I want hard shadings.
I mostly use cadmium red and cadmium yellow, sometimes a more pinkish red.
I often mix my yellow with a bit of brown to make it more pastel-like
and I use all kinds of blues but here I used a turqoise blue

hehe! nice one mufs!
I see you have the Bamboo paper!
is the masking fluid not ruining that surface too much once you peel it off? I haven't tried It yet, but I had paper from hΓ€hnemuhle (different kind of paper) and once I did my background, waited for it to dry, the masking fluid took off the texture... I could cry my heart out!

yes, the masking fluid tears off a bit of the paper, if you use a thin layer, then it tears off less
it's not very suitable for it I know

that's what I hate soo friggin much about the masking fluid... you make an astonishing background, and then it tears the entire piece to shreddes... ggnaaah!!!
With what kind of paper you have the least of problems? cus I realy feel sometimes limited with not being able to work out the background as I would want to :S

I have the least problems with canson 300 gsm cold press, and the lanaquarelle 300 gsm cold press
kheb ook canson katoen geprobeerd, werkt ook
but I use a very thin layer of masking fluid!
also, dip your brush in water with soap first(water met afwasmiddel)then it won't stick to the paper as much
maar idd die van hahnemuhle durven scheuren
en dan als het droog is, gewoon over wrijven met je vingers tot het eraf is

I must comment on one thing though - regardless of preference, what you say about brushes is misleading. There is a reason why animal fur brushes are much more expensive than synthetic ones, and that is because of their incredible capability to transport more pigment and solvent (in the case, the water), without losing their fine edge and precision - contrarily to synthetic brushes, you carry more liquid, but touching the paper does not necessarily lead to all the liquid spreading through the paper. These properties make the animal fur brushes quite superior to the synthetic ones - though there are pretty good synthetic brushes available in the market as well.
And if you feel very concerned about animal cruelty and such, regarding the use of the fur, rest at ease. The weasels/sables/marders are not killed for their fur - every part of them is used for feeding or other purposes in the regions they live in, with the tails being (in the case of Windsor and Newton's Series 7) hand picked for the finest quality brushes - naturally their price reflects this

I didn't say that you shouldn't buy animal fur brushes, I just said that synthetic ones are good enough to start with
ofcourse fur brushes are better, but they're not a necessity when painting when you're a beginner
I know it's not animal abuse, but I just don't really feel the need to try them out

I'm sorry, it seems we both misunderstood each other! I wasn't implying animal brushes were essential or any kind of necessity! Most of the brushes I own are synthetic simply because I cannot afford some of the prices of the animal ones. I just wrote what I did because you said "brushes, are good as long as they're synthetic", which I interpreted as you waying that only the synthetic brushes would be any good.

yes, I meant that synthetic brushes are good as a start
I can't afford them either hehe

oh wow
awesome tutorial!!
what exactly do you use the salt for?
π: 0 β©: 1
TheArtOfMuffin In reply to MadModesty [2011-08-30 16:11:59 +0000 UTC]
it gives a snowy effect, which you can't see here because it's a light picture x)
but it works well in darker colours
