Description Before and after the episode "A dog and pony show", I was somewhat intrigued by the Diamond Dogs. Prior to the show, it was a mystery as to what the hell a diamond dog was, and afterwards, I thought about the what if. In the end, I like the designs of the Diamond Dogs, given their environment and the setting of Equestria at large, but on the other hand, I was disappointed at the comedic potential if these characters were handled differently.

So, as a warm-up, I drew my interpretation of what the Diamond Dogs would look like if I were in charge of designing them. I tried to stay close to the show's style.

The small dog in the yellow coat is the small, big mouthed asshole who runs the place. He doesn't get his hands dirty with any of the actual mining, but he's very good at yelling at his henchmen to make sure their self-esteem is at its optimal minimum. He has a typical gangster accent.

The tall dog with the red body warmer is dumb as fuck, laughs hysterically and is probably the closest to the original diamond dogs. He's slightly competent when handling the heavy equipment and what have you, and often ends up doing the boss' dirty work.

And then there is the brute, doesn't say much and is only a few chromosomes away from being classified as a gorilla.

I sort of added Rarity as a bonus, and while I was inking and coloring it later on, I tried to use the whole official coloring scheme. She's a bit rough around the edges, but it's nice having her around for comparison.

I think, the best part of this redesign is that it doesn't change the episode at all, they would still cringe in pain as their ears are subjected by Rarity's relentless whining, the still would have no manners at all and they'd still be bullying the ponies as they try to enter their underground fortress.

I am tempted to draw these guys in a shootout with the crew from Top Cat.
Don't know why, just seems fitting.

I like to imagine that these guys came in for their pack to regain face. First, they gutted their imbecilic predecessors like fish. Then, they hunt down Rarity and do... things to her.

I love your redesign. I actually wish they looked like this in the show! Oh well.

It reminds me of "The Dogfather"; that was a 1970s cartoon done during the "Godfather" craze (see pics at [link] ). I loved the designs but the cartoons themselves were lame; they basically rehashed the old Rocky and Mugsy cartoons from "Looney Tunes" but with crappier execution (both cartoons had the same animators working on it)

As if the show wasn't awesome enough, just thinking about how cool it would be if they had more antagonists like these...

It always amazes me how the badguys stereotypically always have one tank, one smartass midget, and one seemingly useless idiot.

It's what makes bad guys extra bad.

It's an stereotype, but it's one I really like. Plus, it's not so much the stereotype but the way they are portrayed that could make these characters very enjoyable.

Yes, it sure is quite a coincidence. Although the Powerpuff Girls is more of something I rolled into for the wrong reasons while I genuinely enjoy the latest incarnation of My Little Pony for what it is.

I guess it also has to do with growing up and outgrowing the need to constantly prove my maturity, because I'm, well, mature. Hell, I'm old enough to be someone's dad (albeit a pretty young one).

I'm torn between calling this a stereotype or a classic archetype

Overal however I really liked the Diamond Dogs' designs, they really reminded me of Donjon (probably my favourite French comic series)
[link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheArtrix In reply to Sekele [2011-03-17 19:36:17 +0000 UTC]

It probably leans towards the stereotype, as archetypes are more in the narrative sense (as in, the role they play in telling the story of the protagonist).

I do remember seeing that French comic, and it was probably in a French comic story, hence I never got into it. But say what you want, them French sure know how to make them comics real good.

Ooh fantastic concept! I wonder if the actual target audience would have understood this classic cartoon archetype just as well as the Gollum-esque voice the main dog had.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheArtrix In reply to nessa-gordon [2011-03-17 19:30:41 +0000 UTC]

The one in the red jacked could still deliver the whole Gollum reference without relying on it.

As for the target audience, the show has pretty much proven itself not to care about the target audience not getting the references. The canonical designs do seem to be more current though.
