I don't recall my personal reactions to the characters, but now I understand why Kerchack was the way he was. He was upset and guilty over not being able to keep his son safe. That became even more apparent when he saved that one baby gorilla when Tankor's herd stampede through the jungle.
But it was nice that he finally recognized Tarzan as his son...touching.

Aw, I miss this movie! It was so beautifully done, with enough of that classic Disney humor, but also a surprising amount of dark material as well (I think I hid under the couch at Clayton's death 
Very well done^^ I liked kerchak more towards the end, when he finally acknowledged Tarzan as his son. Such a tender moment!
