Description
My Patreon:Β www.patreon.com/thywordistruthHere it is, the finished product. I attempted a line-less technique with the fire and the clouds above him, and I like the variation of texture it provides. I'm overall really happy with how this came out, except for some of the white space that was left inside the fireball.
This is the main character of a story I wrote a few years ago called, "Mutant," and is available to read in my gallery (just find the sub-folder on the left). His name in the beginning of the story is unknown because he has forgotten it, so I won't spoil it here. He is a fusion between a Rattata, Hydreigon, and Mega Houndoom, and this is his first appearance in a large-scale piece like this. This is inspired by the scene where he fights a Talonflame to save a baby Sentret from being its prey. I hope you like it! ^^
Next month's piece will feature some more characters from one of my stories, so stay tuned!

I can definitely see some improvements here, the darker shading definitely makes it look much nicer Though there are some areas that I think have been left out (Like his arms and the bottom of the right foot. HIS right, not yours) I also think you should look into adding highlights as well; basically shading but making it lighter instead of darker. In this case, the energy blast would be considered a light source, so his front side would be much lighter than his back. I would try going over his front while not pressing down as hard as you normally would. Normally I would use red or yellow for the highlight, but I'm not that good with colored pencils so I wouldn't know how to produce a believable effect with it. But, applying less pressure can work just as well.

Thanks!
Hm, I'm not sure why I didn't shade those; it must have been a conscious decision on my part (probably to account for the light from the flame).
So basically, you mean shading around his body differently than I did? I always do try to account for lighting, but I always mess up, or become puzzled how to shade a certain area.
I've actually just uploaded another colored piece if you wanted to look at it. Though, it also has lighting issues -_-

A new favorite of mine. Iβm glad to see this character drawn again, itβs been a while since I saw him last. I must say that the part I was happiest to see here, besides another new pose which I love, is the depth in the shading. Itβs really nice to see colors go that dark with the materials you used. Iβd say the whole picture turned out great. I also noticed that you commented about not being happy with some white in the fire. One thing Iβve found that helps me (Iβve mainly been using pencil only lately.) is to use my fingers to blend the art together. They make specific tools for this, but Iβve never owned one. XDΒ
This method can also be used to merge two different colors if they are side by side.
Overall, I love it and Iβm looking forward to more.

Thank you! I've heard people use either their fingers, or a napkin to create a "smear" effect, which probably would've helped (the problem is I never remember to do it >.< ) I also should thank you for your comment a while back about making the fire appear more alive; it made me think about it harder, and give it more vibrancy than I would've otherwise. A friend of mine on twitter even commented on how bright it looked (which is obviously a good characteristic for fire). I also will be drawing this character again later on in the sketch series
Speaking of characters, have you drawn more of Derpimus Maximus lately?

I never heard of many people using a napkin, but I can understand why they would. When using only a simple pencil, your fingers will turn black as coal. XDΒ
Looking forward to it. Β
Sadly not really. The majority of the stuff Iβve drawn lately have been things that my sister has challenged me to draw. Which have consisted mainly of her characters that she has made. Thankfully this has helped me to get back into art some as I had become very rusty in it. Though I was challenged to draw her main OC Fall not to long ago, and I ended up drawing it in a pose that I originally had used in a test drawing of Max (I just now decided that will be Derpimus Maximusβ nickname. XD) I was pleased with the results. Maybe Iβll be able to draw again soon. XD

I had no idea your sister was creating so many characters! Was Fall the character you uploaded before that had Justin in the background? I don't remember.
*looks at pic again*
Ah okay, it is. Do you think you'll upload any of those drawings, or are those more just for your sister?

Sheβs made quite a bit, and every single one is different in how they look, and their personalities.
Iβve thought about uploading some of them; however the majority of them are very quick sketches and arenβt too thought out. Iβm still thinking about one of them. Iβm rather happy how it turned out, but I think I would still need to redraw it because it is rather small at the moment.
It has been a while since I last posted a picture on DA, I guess I probably should at least draw something. XD
Any ideas for poses/scenarios? Also Iβve been meaning to ask you, how do you come up with so many different poses? My major problem with drawing characters has always been coming up with poses.Β

I'd love to see one of them, but do what you think you need to do
What's been really helping me with poses lately is that I've been pulling pics from online and creating a reference folder for them. If I see a pose that someone drew that really appeals to me in some way, I save it to that folder. Even if I end up never drawing that pose myself, just seeing the variety of poses in my folder helps my mind to think more about how anatomy works, and different ways I can position a character's body/limbs/head/etc. Poses is one of my biggest problems too, which is why I started keeping a ref folder.

Not bad. The color definitely made it easier to identify the fire!

Thank you; I was challenged by a friend to make the fire appear more alive than in a previous WIP, and it seems like I succeeded

Looks great!! Love the shading. (What do you use--colored pencils, crayons...? I forgot, lol)

Thank you! Yes, I use colored pencils, and then afterwards, I do a little digital manipulation to increase/decrease saturation, brightness, etcetera.

Ohhh, okay. I do the same thing (or at least attempt to) when I upload traditional art as well. If you don't mind me asking, what brand do you use? They look nice and pigmented.

I use a combination of Prang, and Prismacolor. I have to use both since no single kit has all the colors I need. Do you use one of those?

MyArtisMeh In reply to TheBoldMouse [2018-05-02 08:10:30 +0000 UTC]
Um, no, lol. I hope to be able to afford those someday, but for now I'm using a mixture of....(lemme check...) Berol Verithin (which I got at a garage sale a while back), CraZArt, RoseArt, Bazic (IDK where we got it from), and my parents got me a pack of 12 "simply..." colored pencils from Daler Rowney. I'll probably wait until I use a good number of them--or at least the basic colors (black, yellow, red, blue, etc,) up before looking into purchasing those.
I've also thought about looking into purchasing drawing markers, but I honestly like pencils better.

I'm not actually familiar with any of those brands XD I bought the Prang colored pencils, but got the Prismacolor ones two Christmases ago. I haven't used markers to color anything in, but I use them to outline if I don't have a certain color gel pen. I think those are pretty much all I use

MyArtisMeh In reply to TheBoldMouse [2018-05-02 08:23:28 +0000 UTC]
Well I think the Berol Verithin and Bazic are probably good brands--my dad (who used to do sketches) said that Daler Rowney is a "name". (The other two are just cheapo Dollar Tree/Walmart brands, lol. xD)
But yeah! You did a really good job with the drawing. I like it.
