This time i used 3 separate layers for masking. The snake, the snakes eye, and the background.

I increased the focus/sharpness of the main subject and then increased the blurriness on the background layer.

From here it was a matter of playing with the colours.

In this case I upped the the saturation and vibrancy to what seemed to be appropriate.

For this one I tried to do something a little different with the details of the image. Normally I'd try to sharpen the image and increase the details to give it more of a crisp feel but in this case I did the opposite giving the scales more of a smudged/cartoony type of feel. I feel like this might only really work with reptiles with their detailed scales.
