Yea, one like the one in the pictures will probably be pretty hard to find. It's a vintage WWII gasmask. She bought it when she went to Germany, I believe. X3

It should be safe, but if you don't feel right about the canister, don't use it. This mask is post-WWII so you don't have to worry about asbestos, however, if it was used or knocked around, loose activated Charcoal could be an issue, but not a prominent one. Most modern gas masks use the same type of canister. My GP-5 canister works with my M52 gas mask, so...

Oh, a good gas mask to get is the gp-5 a civilian gas mask, it was produced heavily during the 70's making it quite a cheap buy at about $16.
