1) I heard about a kitten that almost died from being on a vegan diet. Why did that happen?
This kitten was given a diet of rice milk, potatoes and pasta. This is not a balanced diet. We only recommend specific products that are designed to meet all the nutritional requirements of domestic cats. These contain added nutrients that are necessary for cats health that aren't found in plants.
2) So I can't feed my cats homemade food?
So long as the meals are meeting the cats requirements you can home make food, but it's necessary to use the Vegecat supplement and follow their instructions.

3) Aren't cats obligate carnivores? Doesn't this mean they need meat?
Being a carnivore means you require nutrients that are naturally almost exclusively found in animal products. They don't need the meat. They need some, but not all, of the nutrients found in meat. These nutrients include Taurine, pre formed Vitamin A and Arachidonic acid. With a few exceptions these nutrients aren't found naturally in plant foods, but they are synthesized and added to vegan cat food just as they are added to meat based cat food.
The idea of a vegan dog seems a much easier sell to people since they are dubbed omnivores even though in nature they would live off a diet almost entirely comprised of meat. Although not defined as carnivores, in essence it's the same thing. A dog can only be vegan if we provide a diet similar to a carnivores nutrient wise. Through research we know what dogs need from meat. Through the same kind of research we know what cats need from it and these things are put into vegan cat foods.
4) Do synthetic nutrients work as well natural ones?
Yes they do. If you check the back of most commercial cat foods you'll see they are fortified with many nutrients also including Taurine. In humans and other animals synthetic nutrients have treated deficiencies (eg anaemia)for decades.
5)My cat is throwing up it's food. What should I do?
This happens occasionally with some our members and we can't you give any certain answer as to why this is. However, if it's shortly after eating or during eating, it's very possibly due to regurgitation from eating too fast. This is a common problem Hills pet and Purina have even written about. If it persistently happens away from meal time and/or your cat doesn't seem normal you may wish to consult a vet. If it persistently happens at meal time and your cat appears their usual self you could either try a different plant based cat food or follow the instructions in these links. We've not heard any disaster stories despite common complaints of this.

A lot of common cat foods use by-products yes. Through buying these you're supporting the meat industry with your money. This is basically the only big difference between regular cat food and vegan cat food. These by-products are not offering your cat any provable benefit over pre made vegan cat food. Higher quality non vegan cat foods do not use by-products and you are directly driving demand for slaughter by buying them.
7) Isn't it wrong to force our ideals on cats? It's not unethical for a cat since it's natural to them. Veganism is for humans.
In nature carnivores will be carnivores who kill and eat other creatures, because they have no other choice. This is nature and it would be wrong to interfere with they need to do to survive. However, with domesticated house cats it's different. You've given them a safe shelter and you're guaranteeing them daily food. You have every right to choose a diet that doesn't cause harm to anything including the cat. Some of our members have told us their cats prefer vegan cat food over their old animal based diet.
There's nothing natural about taking in a cat and feeding it other animals. As vegans we strive to minimize suffering where we can and we know that all animals deserve the right to life equally. We should absolutely extend this to what we feed our companion animals.
8) I have an outdoor cat. It will just hunt anyway so what's the point?
We can't control everything. This doesn't mean we shouldn't control what we can.
9) How long does a vegan cat live?
A vegan cat lives as long as any other cat. Here at the group we've not heard any reports of early death or serious illness that could be linked to the feeding of vegan cat food. Several of our members have had cats on vegan diets for many years, sometimes over a decade. Sometimes they started with health conditions that improved once turning vegan.
10) Do I have to test all the time for urinary tract infections?
This is your choice. You don't need to test constantly, but you should know the symptoms of UTIs and watch out for them. UTIs aren't all that rare hence the availability of testing strips, products and articles to help people deal with them.
Vegetables are less acidic than meat, but just like regular cat food manufacturers, vegan cat food manufacturers add acidifiers such as D Methionine to help keep the urinary tract healthy.
11) What if my cat already has a UTI?
They can still be vegan. For cats with UTIs we recommend the product Vegecat pHi which is a more acidic supplement you add to home made meals such as these www.vegepet.com/vcatinstr.pdf . There are other acidifiers you can add if you don't wish to home make.
12) My cat is ill. Can they be vegan?
If a cat is prescribed a special diet they may not be able to do a fully vegan diet, and your options should be discussed with an open minded, yet rational, vet. If however your cat hasn't been prescribed a special diet we don't see a reason they can't be put on vegan cat food whilst continuing to take any medication they have been prescribed.
13) How do I transition my cat to a vegan diet?
Cats are different in how willing they are to try new foods. Your experience might be very different to other peoples. Some cats might take instantly to their new diet. Some cats might need some flavour enhancers such as Vegeyeast, brewers yeast or nutritional yeast. Please talk to us here, at vegan cats, if you're having any trouble.
14) Is it okay to feed my cat algaes/seaweeds like dulse, nori, kelp and chlorella?
Whilst these things don't contain any obvious toxins, they do potentially have too much iodine, magnesium and phosphorus which will increase their chances of developing hyperthyroidism and urinary crystals.

There actually are a few types of vegetarian dog food. Some dogs have severe allergies and can't eat anything else.

Yep. Lots of dogs are allergic to chicken, and a few are even allergic to beef and lamb. I used to work in a pet store, which is why I know this.

It's rare for a dog to be allergic to all types of meat, but it does happen. We had a couple of customers who regularly purchased vegetarian dog food for that very reason. They had their dogs tested and everything. We had many more customers whose dogs could only have lamb or duck.
Dogs have been living alongside us and basically eating our garbage for the last 10,000 years. In that time, they have effectively become omnivores. Then need protein, but like humans, they can get it from sources other than meat. Thus, vegetarian dog food.
