Description
The Abyss Watcher is a predatory creature that dwells both in the murky depths of the sea, but can also crawl and breathe on land during moonless nights.

Its massive eyes, protected under a hard, transparent dome, still catch the last bit of light and spy on its prey.

The animal grows to about 1 meter in length, there is no sexual dimorphism.

With two bioluminescent luminaries, it lures prey in the darkness has. Once within range, the long fangs open to reveal a muscular maw from which a poisonous dart shoots out. Within a fraction of a second, the paralyzed prey is pulled into the maw, which retracts back into the body and the fangs close, forming a cage from which there is no escape.

The animal spends most of its life motionless on the ground, always waiting for prey. Conspecifics rarely meet and never stay together. Rank fights do not exist.

Sexual partners attract each other with pheromones. The female lays a package with a good 10,000 eggs, which are fertilized by the male. The parents then separate. The female guards the brood until hatching, the larvae rise, feed on plankton and later sink to the bottom of the water for metamorphosis.

The venom is very deadly and painful to humans.
