There's a reason why Aardan (Zero's father) is overreacting as badly as he is.He used to be a slave to the Empire where he was forced to repair and create new warships for a good ten years of his life. And then, out of a series of almost fatal events, he was able to escape with Vera (Zero's look-alike mother) to Iridekk which is far, far away from Irken-controlled territory.
