Description Heya! Another speedpaint with a dragon, a bit more of a lizardy type this time. 70 minutes. Themed 'not so friendly'.

I really feel I could spend some more time on this and maybe I will! But for now, I enjoyed making this, I hope you like it!

You know who'd be great to voice the dragon?
Cumberbatch!

Hi, here from ProjectComment
First of all, I'd like to say that this is amazing, considering you did it in only a little over an hour.
The background is simply breathtaking: with only some dots, dashes and lines of colour you managed to make quite a detailed picture: it's very impressionistic. The birds (crows? ravens? pteranodons?) flying up add a nice touch of movement while giving a greater sense of depth. The colours are also nicely chosen, in my opinion: they are all toned down with shades of brown and grey, and therefore ideal for your underground\deep forest setting. I love the rays of light.
The man and the lizard dragon seem unfinished to me. The dragons face and neck have lots of detail, but the rest of its body doesn't, and it just seems wrong to me. This is especially noticeable in its feet and tail. The hero just seems like a stick figure: being in the foreground, it seems like he should have a little more detail, even if he's small compared to everything else. (btw, if I were him I'd be running just as fast in the opposite direction, even if I did have two swords)
And that's all! Keep up the good work! I'd love to see this finished.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I'm working on an improved and more detailed version of this, which also includes better anatomy for the dragon and some armour on the guy. I'm glad you like the background and colors I would probably also be getting out of there, but that wouldn't make for a very compelling plot I think

This is awesome, the expression on the dragon's face is just perfect. It looks like he's going, 'if you insist."

I love the colors here and my favorite part is the dragon by far. He has a very interesting face and a unique shape. Most of this painting looks unfinished especially the man and the lower half of the dragon. I think you could do something cool with his tail too. But for a speed paint it is very good I can see you have a lot of skill just by looking at the dragons face. The lighting is also very cool I wish some of it reflected off the man'sΒ cape. The colors in the painting definitely have a very prehistoric feel. I fell like he is in a jungle swamp somewhere. I also like that you put the birds in there for scale. The shape on the right looks like it could be the dragon's cave or some sort of mountain. I would love to see this painting finished I thik that the dragon could be really cool. Maybe you even give him some pterodactylΒ wings which could add a really cool type of light translucency to the painting.Β

Hey, I'm glad you like it and thanks for the feedback! It's totally unfinished, I wasn't very succesful in making it all feel finished within the time limit. You've got the same ideas about the environment as I did when I was making this

If I decide to finish this I will definitely post it, so keep an eye out

I love the colors, and maybe i'm reading into it but that the dragon is in lighter tones and the warrior is a black silhouette makes it seem like the dragon is the "good guy" which I really love. his head is pretty well defined, and while a speedpaint obviously comes with some restrictions in terms of time you can spend on every aspect individually, the anatomy of the dragons lower body is a little confusing, it's hard to tell what's going on with his legs in general. the background is especially impressive to me at least, overall i love it!Β

Thanks! I had the anatomy sketched out but didn't paint it clearly in the end, so I see what you mean. Not that it was great in the sketch, but that would have been less confusing I think

Speeeeedpainting! Tried it once but it turned out less speedy and more fail. This is pretty well done~

I like how sharp the dragon-lizard's face is. It's a good eye-draw so people won't spend too much time on the less detailed portions of the image. The glow of his/her eye is a nice touch. I know it's a speedpaint, so there's really only so much you can do, but the arms and hands are a little strange. The left arm in the background doesn't give off the right impression of distance in relation to the other arm. I can't really say how you'd fix that, however. I'm also wanting the right hand to have a bit more detail, mainly in the form of distinguishable (albeit blocky) fingers. And maybe the spikes on the dragon's head and neck stand out a little too much? They're distinctly sharper than everything else.

I'd like to point out the leaves on the trees; they do well to blend in with the colour scheme (which is really pleasing, by the way!), yet in my peripheral vision, it seems a tad stifling to the main focus, if that makes sense: not so much distracting as giving off the feeling of being boxed in. The contrast of the darker sets of leaves might be the cause. But the contrast of everything else is wonderful, especially the stark red of the hero's cape opposed to the blue of the dragon. The ambient lighting is well done, too. I had a final comment about what I believe to be a preset brush for the leaves, but that's a purely personal qualm, and I'm terribly guilty of using presets myself. -3-

It's amazing sometimes how speedpaints don't appear speedy. I think that's what I like most about these. Keep up the good work!

Hey, thanks for the elaborate feedback!

Speedpainting is a very specific genre of painting I feel, being good at painting doesn't make you good at painting in general - and vice versa.Β

I absolutely agree about the roughness of almost everything but the dragon, now that I look at it again. Some more lassoing would have done the trick but I just didn't see the issue when I was working on this. The leaves on the tree are a custom brush (some kind of grungy texture), that saves so much time in cases like this Hiding it could have been a little more effective if the rest of the painting was less rough I think.

But I'm glad you like it, and thanks again. ^^

the Never Ending Story was as big a part of my imaginings as a kid, can't imagine a childhood with out its influenceΒ Β what kinda things did you grow up with then?

Theclockworkpainter In reply to CloudedHeu [2016-08-31 08:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I read a lot, mostly fantasy books. And also some greek mythology for kids, I think. I played a lot of pokemon, rayman and spyro on my gameboy and I built things out of lego. I don't really think I had one big influence on my life in the form of a movie or sth in that time ^^Β

CloudedHeu In reply to Theclockworkpainter [2016-09-02 00:09:40 +0000 UTC]

If you call the bible mythology that was another big part of my childhood, and I wasn't allowed to have others or have 'magic' related entertainment because of superstitions, except the never ending story and a few other Disney movies slipped under the radar. though I never felt left out, I had my pets, nature stuff, dinosaurs, crafts and drew all the dragons I wanted (despite being discourage from it i couldn't draw enough of 'em, also was a smart arse about it and called them fantasy dinos etc. Β ). Also I got Lego, learnt about ethical ambiguity with out realizing it.

I don't know if I'd classify the bible as mythology, but if it was a big part of your childhood it might be an influence on your art My mom didn't like me watching pokemon either but I somehow managed to convince her that it wasn't a violent show. ^^

But not being allowed to draw dragons, that's pretty bad glad you were a smart arse haha.
