Description
Dwarvish analog for my partner's Olm TTRPG project.
We debated a bit on whether or not the classic Tolkien themed fantasy races should be included - on one hand they're in everything and feel pretty generic to me, on the other hand they're such a staple I feel some folks are bit lost without them. We leaned toward including them for a bit, but ended up ditching that and taking some of the essence of each classic race and morphing it into something vaguely similar but more unique. Players could always reskin them to be closer to the classic races they know if they have a favorite they really don't want to miss out on.
Dritonan are the Dwarven analogue - Though we ended up moving quite far away from most of the characteristics most folks might expect of them.
Keeping with the Earthy/Mining theme, they are a sort of sentient root people living in mostly underground cities and towns, mining for metals, gems, and other valuable minerals like salt and limestone. Typical cultures lean towards being industrious problem solvers and creative thinkers. Some of the best metal and stone workers are Dritonan, but accomplished individuals can also be master painters, plant breeders, etc. Even clerks, merchants, sanitation workers etc will usually have a creative hobby they are quite dedicated to. Less greedy than the classic dwarven trope, they are more apt to spend their mineral wealth or use it for a project than to hoard it, though many do tend to hoard tools and art objects.
Not as outwardly expressive as some of the other sentient species, they do tend to come off as gruff, stoic and sometimes a bit melancholy, and may be perceived as rude or aloof by others, but they are often much more generous and kind than many assume.
They have some control over their outward appearance - some appear more dwarvish / human in the face, and some have more eldritch or animalistic features. More time spent in the sun results in the growth of moss on the body, this can be more or less attractive depending on the culture or individual, similar to tanning in humans. Some individuals cultivate specific species of moss or flowers as a sort of organic jewelry.
Sex and Gender are outside concepts to them - they reproduce via a sort of ritual that imbibes a mandrake like root with a soul to produce a child. Babies are grown in a sort of bassinet / flower pot of soft dirt until they are old enough to be carried around, they become more humanoid as they age.
