Description

The actual organism is a plant or lichen that feeds on corpses and assimilates knowledge and personality traits while fused with a hose - most of these mental traits tend to fade after a while, but longer lived individuals can accumulate a personality of their own, comprised of bits of those they're assimilated. They can assimilate multiple corpses at once but usually end up with multiple personalities (the less decayed specimen will be dominant).

Not predatory but more than happy to eat your corpse if you happen to have an... accident. Most are less than trustworthy but not generally prone to outward violence. Some individuals have more altruistic traits and many live in a sort of symbiosis with intelligent races, often serving as a repository for generational knowledge in exchange for the right to assimilate the corpses of esteemed elders and other important villagers.
Less scrupulous individuals are often found in poorly tended graveyards or giving bad advice to motley groups of idiots wandering around in dungeons.
The flowers and seeds are used in potions and rituals to commune with the dead.
