Not really.
It doesn't understand its own themes, its characters are 1 dimensional, overuses shock value, has random plot conveniences, characters make plain stupid decisions, asspulls, awful ending, I could go on all day.
The only thing anyone remembers about the characters is how they died, nothing more.

we just need magical boy anime and a good one

I recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena. Madoka borrows heavily from it and Utena is just all around better (mostly because it actually had TIME to develop things).
And who needs magical boy anime when you have GAR like Cromartie High School and Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure?

I've been meaning to watch some Magical Girl stuff to see what all Β the fuss is about. Do you have any recommendations?
I was going to start with Pueilli thingy Magica Madoka (spellingΒ ), but from what I've heard that would be like starting mecha shows with Neon Genesis Evangelion. Which I did.
I'd like something not too long, fairly typical, decent plot+characters and not overly fanservicey (but still with some, directly proportional to the age of the girls in question. No. underage. fanservice.)(but I am in the UK, so that means 16+)

Puella madoka magica or something like that is a fairly good one since it goes for a unique twist in magical girl genre. Not sure if it was too long but they are around middle school or first or second year in highschool and there is little fanservice.Β
