Description

A conniving leonin rakshasa with aspirations of one day owning the stars, and the patience to see that dream to fruition.

Avatarana are known to have a unremovable flap of leather covering their grotesque faces, but Massaman's seems curiously exposed, leading one to wonder if it isn't merely an ornate mask. Whose face could be hiding underneath? Perhaps... Yours?

Typical avatarana have a second pair of arms where their legs should be, but Massaman is unusual in that he has 8 sets of limbs, grotesquely elongated and sporting one too many elbows. When hunched in his usual resting pose he stands around 6 feet tall, but if he fully extended his limbs he would tower over most mortals.

Like his ilk, Massaman can climb into the bodies of other creatures to possess them. While most simply seep into their host like murcury, Massaman prefers to climb in through an opening, delighting in his host's reactions as he grotesquely stretches them around his unnaturally limber form. Once fully inside, he can slip into the host's body like a suit and control them completely, even speaking with their voice while the host can only watch, trapped in their body.

Massaman freely uses and discards hosts as he needs, attempting to work his way higher in the social chain to positions of greater power. That is how he met Azidasa during the Master of Masters tournament. While piloting the body of a gnoll boy, he served poisoned wine to Azidasa and two large rakshasa he was treating to dinner. The clever Goblin saw through his ruse and lured him outside, at which point Massaman crawled out of the boy like a spider made of arms.

Understanding that he had no chance in a fight, Azidasa attempted to trick the avatarana into banter, but the focused rakshasa was more concerned about securing a position close to the leader of their town than a chat. Azidasa, realizing he was outmatched, instead gave in to Massaman's possession, deciding to cooperate with the rakshasa while he formulated a plan, giving him advice on what the goblin would do so as not to draw undue attention to himself before Azidasa could figure out how best to deal with him...

I enjoyed designing this guy. Nothing quite felt right until I made his legs more arms, then everything settled into place. I tried a couple of versions with his face covered by the cloth but nothing felt right. His little beady eyes felt way more unsettling than a piece of cloth to me, but I also figured that maybe he wears a lion mask instead.

I don't remember why I decided to give him a cat's cradle. I remembered it being some sort of ritual for divination or something before becoming a game.

Massaman is named after the curry, because it's the GM's favorite.
