I was up late last night talking with a friend and she helped me come up with some pretty sad Carmelita headcanons!

First, she came from a poor home, living only with her hard-working mother, learning early on that self-discipline and a strong personality in the face of adversity is what make’s a person great.
Second, she got into fights. A LOT. Not over any old thing either, usually it was over someone picking on the weaker guy. Carmelita took it upon herself to be the underdog. To take justice into her own hands.
Third, she had crazy hair and never could get it to cooperate with her, not until she’d go into the police academy when she’s older.
Fourth, at one point, breaking away from everything she knew and learned from her mother, Carmelita tracked down her father, all the way in England. And found he had a family there, a wife and son... and she realized what she was. The product of an affair. The similarities between them could not be denied, and his wife chastized him, in front of Carmelita.
She wanted so much to run back home, but she was so far away. The wife was not unsympathetic to how the young girl felt, and paid for her ticket back home, even walking her to the station and buying her a new jacket. From then on she had a severe distrust of any man who didn’t show his true colors right away. This is especially evident with her relationship with Sly, and why she reacted to coarsely when Sly began thieving again.
She believed in him and he turned out not to be the man she had hoped.
