I was hoping that I could introduce some character development for Rick.

The main issue is that he's part wolf, which most people have misconceptions on. Wolves aren't domesticated animals. They are wild, they have impulses. Most people don't understand how to work with those impulses.

such is the case with Rick. No one had taught him, nor learned themselves, how to deal with his impulses. As such he's a cocky, impulsive, destructive character.
