I tried to "skip" and untick the boxes for the crap, but they went and installed themselves anyway. I knew there was something bad going on because it stayed frozen for ages, ending with a shit load of icons on my taskbar, so my trust in this thing is out of the window now.

Its actually easy. There are 3 Buttons every time when it asks you to install something. Just click on the Empty one.

CarnalConcepts , i suggest you to use Universal Extractor to extract these exe's, and after extraction only take the needed files and folders for the visual style only. I always use this metod because i only want to change visual style of my explorer, without mess up my Windows 7 with unnecessary extra add-ons

Not heard of that, might give it a try. I used Windows 7 to extract the zip and it only unzipped an .exe file which took several minutes of installing crap on my machine. Not sure I want to risk it again, I don't like wasting my time, but thanks for the advice.
