Description
Hey guys, gals, and fellow tetrapodsI'm humbled to show you my latest piece, "Ronin".
This is a *very speculative* scenario, The setting is around 66.3 to 66 mya in the iconic Hell Creek Formation, particularly in the region now known as Montana.
In this fictious moment of the antediluvian past, a family consisting of a couple of Triceratops prorsus cows and a calf get lost in the woods. During their wandering, they stumble on to a very unusual individual. This individual, he look like one of their own, yet their is some strange peculiarities with this bull. The horns, the vibrant frill, the different markings, even the nuance in behavior, they all seem some what off. The peculiar bull takes a glace at them, almost looking like it was going to charge, a moment that felt frozen in time. And as sudden as he appear, he lumber him self back further deep into the murky cypress swamp. Unbeknownst to them, that individual is the very last of his kind, an endling of Triceratops horridus.
------------------------------------------------------------
This piece was made to explore the idea of transitions. This is primarily represented by the transition from one species to another. The old bull is Triceratops horridus, which existed between 68-66.8 mya. The species is at the very end of its time, dying out and being slowly transitioned into Triceratops prorsus, the ones of the right. It is partially inspired by specimen MOR3027, better known as Yoshi's Trike, a transitional species between the older T. horridus and the younger T. prorsus. But there's more hidden under the surface. Hidden in the foliage is a Didelphodon, a small mammal that's kin go on to replace dinosaurs after the K-Pg mass extinction—the ultimate transition.
The magnolia blossoming, seen on the left and right, are close in appearance to Japanese sakura cherry blossoms which symbolize life, death, and renewal due to their short blooming period. Samurai are tied to these plants as they represent the short but impactful lives led by the samurai. Ronin, the namesake of this painting, are aimless samurai without masters which parallel the aimlessly wandering T. horridus, awaiting their bold and vibrant extinction. Transition is a beautiful thing, and periods of transition call to attention the fleeting, ever-changing nature of life. Right now, I am moving on to a new phase in my own life, from high school to college. This work draws from the many emotions that fly through me as I stand on the edge of transition—the nervous anxiety, but ever-prevailing optimistic hopefulness.
The posing of this piece was based on the White Rhinoceros diorama in the AMNH.
