Description
Finished with the muscle study of carnotaurus! The body is done in markers and colored pencil, background is painted in acrylic paint, and the labels added through Illustrator. I'm still learning paleo reconstruction, so feedback is always appreciated. My site: rushelle.com/

I think the more glaring issue here is the use of mammalian muscle names. It's not only an issue of taxonomically consistent nomenclature as used traditionally by scientists but also of assumptions of homology. The pterygoideus ventralis/posterior which you have labeled as "masseter" certainly isn't homologous with the mammalian muscle. Mammals, due to how they develop their ears , have the homolog of the pterygoideus ventralis muscle associated with the middle ear. The mammalian masseter is derived from the mandibular adductors originating at the top of the back of the skull.
Also I don't think the transversospinalis capitis would attach that far forward on the skull. See: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10… .
I'd seriously recommend your revising this based the output of Witmer and cohorts as well as Hutchinson's work to be on the safe side. I'd also recommend making extensive use of Google Scholar next time you endeavour into such a project as this.

Oh wow, I see what you mean. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and those helpful links. I'll make the change with the pterygoideus on all my anatomy studies right away and study those links you shared. Thank you again so much, I'll admit I'm still learning so any advice is very much welcomed and appreciated. If there's any other label errors I made that are more mammalian or wrong please let me know!

This is just amazing, the accuracy of this reconstruction is astonishing. Really well done.

Poor carnotaurus... their wimpy vestigial arms awkwardly set with the palms facing outward, as though anticipating a high-five that will never come...
On the other hand, I love all these muscles! Looks like a fantastic and very realistic reconstruction. this clearly looks like a powerful predator, despite those teeny arms.

No kidding! I was really shocked when I first started to draw the radius and ulna, I almost didn't notice they had one due to how tiny they are. And adding muscles to it was even more challenging, lol!
Thank you!

Honestly, I just think of the carnotaurus as a giant mouth with legs. at least the t rex no longer has the wimpiest arms on the block.

Kinda! It'll look different once I add all the soft tissue, skin, fat, and horns.

It's actually a carnotaurus.

Not to be too picky but...I think Carnotaurus would've had some more muscles on its face. Namely jaw muscles, which lay over the jaw bones in other animals (not to mention these jaw muscles would've been fairly big to support a strong bite). The exposed skull placed ahead of the rest of the highly detailed body just looks...kinda weird :V
also; lips?
Either way this is an outstanding (and ultimately believable) piece of traditional art Looks like something out of those dinosaur books I used to read as a kid

I went back and made them bigger, but nowhere near as big as T Rex. Thanks for the suggestion!

I wasn't sure about making the masseters too big. I read a lot of research that claims that carnotaurus had weak jaws. Unless there's a recent change in that theory. If I'm wrong though I'm more than happy to change it, thanks for the feedback!
