Description I had a random dream about these seal-like creatures that had a sail-like fin on their back that they used to help them sail across the water. So the next morning I did some silhouettes and came up with a design. I call them sailbacks. They are semi aquatic mammals. They love to eat fish, bask in the sun, swim, and receive attention from people. Sailback pups are born white with no markings, as they age they start developing markings. Sailbacks are social animals with each other and with humans. They love to do tricks and beg for food. Some humans even keep them as pets, sailbacks love to curl up on a pillow and sleep next to their caretaker.

Technique

Impact

So, here's my first critique.

Vision: Excellent. While a dream may have provoked this, unless it was far more detailed than the description says you did a lot of work on expanding it, what with notes on their behavior and anatomy.

The fact that they have just one sail makes them more effective creatures, in my opinion. I'll grant that, from a speculative biology viewpoint, an odd number of limbs seems unlikely to evolve, but it's not unknown, as Opabinia can attest to. They're very clearly seal derived, though, with the limbs and overall body shape. I got here through Future Zoology, so I'm viewing it through that lens.

The wing structure bothers me less in that realm, since bat-like wings have appeared numerous times in the fossil record.

Originality: It's definitely original. Odd-limbed creatures are uncommon, and this was a dream.

Technique: Anatomically, criticizing it is impossible for me: It's fictional, and I don't know enough about physiology to say if something violates basic biomechanics. Doesn't seem to, though.

Impact: A low rating was given here--not because of a deficiency in the work, but because it simply didn't provoke much of an emotional reaction from me. It's interesting, but a lot of things are pretty interesting, and interest isn't a particularly impactful emotion for me.

Really cool, I like your creation and how the sail has an actual function, rather than just being an accessory!
