Sweet composition. Dynamic range pushed a bit too far (blowout & burnout), but still of great value.

Sometimes I push the light level adjustments beyond optimal,

well, just because I want to I guess.

The disadvantage of pushing the dynamic range too far is the consequent loss of detail in highlights and shadows.

However, it goes further than that. With a fair amount of blowout and burnout, considerable parts of the tonal range are lost, forcing the rest of the image's pixels to be expressed in a narrower tonal range. This results in significant loss of tonal quality.

To see this at he camera level, you can use the histogram mode. Or an image can be opened in Photoshop > Image > Adjustments > Levels... to examine its histogram. If you examine the artistic photos where most of the image is black and there is considerable blow out, the usable tonal range is expressed in only 25% or less of the tonal range, with really crappy tonal range.

Like everything else in life, there are tradeoffs to most choices.
