Description
Plateosaurus is a triassic genus of basal sauropodomorph which can be found in the weirdest places of germany and central europe as a whole. It is known from two geographically very long formations, the Trossingen Formation which streches from the Swiss Alps all the way to Thuringia and the Burgsandstein of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, as well as an isolated locality in Frick. I depicted P. engelhardti, found in the first formation. They are practically allways found in swampy environments, even though they seem poorly adapted for that environment and many other parts of triassic germany seem very arid. Also, every specimen I know of is an adult or a subadult very close to maturity. Whether thats because Plateosaurus had a tendency to (go to) die in swamps, or swamps being good at preserving the bones of adults, or a combination, is unknown. What most captivated me are the huge and terrifying forelimbs, equipped with claws i would compare to those of a huge bear. I can imagine them taking care of a feisty Liliensternus or two in short order.
This male is seen in his full colourful glory in mating season. During that season, the males colour their heads a bright yellow with blue accents. They also try to intimidate, and if that does not work, punch anything which is at least two thirds their own size.
This guy is charging at a truly fearless opponent which has not backed down from his displays in over an hour: a large Tree.
