Considering how the last time there was time travel involved, and how there wound up being two Twilights, one from the future and one from the past, couldn't present Twilight use the time travel spell to attend the party while past Twilight continued what she was originally doing? (of course not, since that spell could only be used once, and definitely wouldn't last long enough for her to enjoy the party. That is, unless they found a more powerful version of the spell. Plus, past Twilight would eventually believe that she should make amends like in the episode, which would lead to some different issues.)

DIfficulty: is Present Twilight trying to pass herself off as Past Twilight (problem: WINGS), or outright saying, "I'm Twilight Sparkle from the future, and yes, I got promoted to Alicorn. Long story. I came from the future because you're really miserable then, and I'm trying to prevent that. And hey, instead of having your party attended by a mere fellow student, your party is being attended by a Princess with a debt to you, and how cool is that? Let's party!"

How about a dress and covering her wings? Or a spell to hide them temporarily? (I guess someone who can enter a book and outright transform matter can do such a thing too) In addition to not talking about the "future twilight" thing and stuff. She would attend the party AND avert the night apocalypse.

If you would watch x-men:days of future past than you could find how the spell could look. In there wolverine went to the past but woke up in his older self with memories of future.

I actually watched Days of Future Past for the first time just the other day, so this is exactly the kind of time travel I was imagining Twilight using -- where she just takes over her past self's body and basically resets the timeline to S1E1.
I didn't really think about how most people wouldn't exactly have that method of time travel at the forefront of their minds until after. Oh well.
