I think I'm the only person who had absolutely no problem with Barbara becoming Batgirl again.

Then again, I might be the only person on the planet who hate Oracle.

Great drawing! I am very sad to hear that DC is turning Babs from Oracle back to Batgirl. Oracle was a unique character who was powerful in a way no one else was. Babs as Batgirl is, well, yet another chipper female character who wears tight clothes and kicks things.

I often hear the remark about how it's "unrealistic" that Oracle couldn't walk for all those years in a world filled with super-tech and miracles . . . but if you think about it . . . that argument could apply to almost any character in the DCU. I mean, think about Bruce Wayne. He's in a world filled with telepaths who would make super-therapists (one of whom is a close friend who he worked with for years in the JLA), yet he's still an emotional wreck about something that happened 20 years ago. Is that any more realistic?

The fact is, everyone ignores it because being sad and angry is vital to Batman's character growth. Just like ending up in a wheelchair was vital to Babs'.

"Oracle was a unique character who was powerful in a way no one else was. Babs as Batgirl is, well, yet another chipper female character who wears tight clothes and kicks things."

Oh woe, and the nashing of teeth. You do know that the entire genre is predicated on "character who wears tight clothes and kicks things."

Unfortunately people are just going to have to get over it, because Oracle is not coming back.

Cool!

I am between two minds here...

As much as I had enjoyed some of the integrated Bat- stories, it feels like a total asshole move for the character to live in the world with cloning, more than ten alien races with super-science, routine time travel, people getting cybernetics, growing new spines (thanks Grant Morrison), using actual f__ing magic, or just straight coming back from the dead, yada, yada, yada... and she is still locked in that chair.

Sort of like this one story I saw where Zatanna had a glimpse of the future, so she arranges to have a "girls night out" with the then young Barbara and Wonder Woman (guess there wasn't any easier way to trot out all the tired "Wonder Woman gets hit on by d-bags in a club who somehow don't notice who she is" gags) and then show Z and WW have a private conversation about it where they have a little cry then decide to "pull out all the stops" cuz Babs will be crippled soon. At first I thought that the story was "meh" but then it made me angry to think about it. If the story was a straight Barbara memory/flashback that would have been cool but the chosen approach Sucked.

A lot of ass.

Hard.

If I were Barbara, I would either have fixed myself by now, and or told the rest of the JLU (starting with Batman) to go F__ themselves for basically being happy to have me as the 24/7 human search engine, and nothing else.

On the other hand, I agree with your sentiment, the Powers-that-be don't give a F__ as long as the revenue graph stops resembling a ski slope, so this will all be... a dream or some other bullshit and be put back next year.

If I were running DC, I would completely remove Batman's mythology from the rest of the Comics so that all the actual growth that Barbara and Dick have gone through could be maintained, and get back to stories that are interesting without all the lame Deus Ex Machina bullshit (time travelling bullets, teleporters, superarmor, etc.), and Batman would get back to being "Year One/Nolan cool" instead of "flavor of the month" cool.

I always imagined how it could have been to have Supes and Bats comic take place in the 40s, with each new characters that followed being as old as/set in their respective eras. Kinda like what that amazing Elseworld NewFrontier proposed only continuing this until our current days/setting stories in the past to keep them "young".

Yeah, it kinda doesn't answer much of what you were saying above, but my own take on your last point "If I were running DC..."

She's closer to what Steph was than what Babs should be...
(and I mean, awkward not confident early-days Steph!Spoiler rather than the recent Steph!Batgirl)

To be fair, this Babs is pretty literally finding her feet while still picking back up being Batgirl. It isn't a blank slate where she's starting from scratch, she's rebuilding herself after living through The Killing Joke. That would tend to remove some confidence.

Great pic. As much as I liked Oracle, Im so happy that Babs is back as batgirl. Just read her #1 and its pretty cool. Im trying to give the new 52 a chance especially when it comes to the Bat-books.

I'll wait for the TPBs, like I usually do
But it was Oracle/BoP that made me like Barb in the first place.... And I will miss both previous Batgirls characters and respective books..

Cass was a great batgirl and as much as i like steph, she is the ultimate filler character. Babs was my Batgirl mostly cause of BTAS.

Definitely understand the want to wait tho. I just get to excited over these things.

My problem with Babs as Batgirl is mostly - without talking about the loss of "Oracle" and the kind of character she was - that most people requestion Babs!Batgirl weren't actually fans of the character Batgirl in the comics, but mostly fan of "the idea" of her.
I mean, how many people requesting her return, not talking about you necessary, did read comics featuring Babs as Batgirl to begin with? The old school silver age comics? DC's reprinted most of those in Showcase collection!
Or actual recent comics, there's been a lot of them, like a Batgirl one-shot special around the Killing Joke. Batgirl Year One too. There was an arc set around her time as Batgirl in Batman: Confidentials some years ago..

And we're also losing Steph or Cassie as Batgirl, which fans of Batgirl like me, that have been following and buying and reading, have learned to like.

I'm sure if Batgirl shows up in an adaptation like any of the lives movies (say, a future Christopher Nolan movie, for example!) or a cartoon, they'll always start up from the beginning and bring Babs in. Like having HAl Jordan in a GL movie, not Kyle or John Stewart.
The comics should be the place where characters change, evolve and outgrow their original role, it should have been left for Cassie or Steph to shine a Batgirl there she you know they won't take the spotlight anywhere else..
This regression kinda annoys me... :/

(sorry for the wall of text.. it's a subject that gets me going on and on and on and...)
Oh, by now, Babs been Oracle longer than Batgirl in print. Plus having Batwoman simultaneously kinda makes her type of Batgirl (redhead, tech-ie, etc..) obsolete..

No worries on the wall of text. its a great discussion.

I totally agree with the Batgirl/Woman point. I have yet to read a story where i genuinely thought Kathy Kane was useful. Keep in mind i got out of reading regularly before she showed up though.

BTAS Is what defined batman for me growing up. After that i jumped into the silver age stuff which was more like icing on the established character. Going back and seeing her in the Adam West show was the nail in the coffin. She will always be Batgirl for me no matter how cool and well done her oracle time was.

Cass worked for me because of NML. With out those events and then her role in murderer/fugitive her character falls flat for me.

Steph is pure filler. I hate that they used her to just fill the gap between story transitions. First with robin, then war crimes, then Batgirl. What the hell was wrong with Spoiler? I always liked her in that role, not when shes filling in while they figure crap out. I would love to see her come back as Spoiler in a new BoP or hell in her own book.

Wall of text back atcha
