I prefer to keep the Pac-folk with their regular proportions, otherwise they kinda look weird to me :/

With other characters, sure, why not. It's fun changing their proportions or art style.
But with some cartoony like Pac-Man, it feels a bit weird and odd to me. Losing the "cut pizza" shape kinda loses the characters, kinda like messing with Bomberman in the awful Bomberman Act Zero game...

Midway, who had the rights to localize Pac-Man in the US, couldn't wait for Namco to make an official sequel to the popular arcade game so they went ahead and made their own in the form of Ms. Pac-Man to make it somewhat different from the first game. It became so popular, that Namco made it an official part of the series.
