Description This is the mission patch of the Pallada class' earliest beginnings. Before the USS Pallada NCC-780 was built, her designers constructed a one-third scale, man-rated model. The vessel, named XK-7GLI and dubbed "Double Drumstick" by her flight crew was built as a joint European Hegemony / USSR project before the blueprints of the Pallada class were finalized and Earth-wide construction began.
The development team, headed by Maria Boccioni, considered computer simulations unreliable and wanted to see first-hand how their design behaves under real conditions. The "starship" (it never left the Sol system) was equipped with a shuttle-grade Warp propulsion system and was used to test the ship's handling characteristics in subspace, interplanetary space and orbit.
The results led to the fine-tuning of the Pallada concept and within a year, construction of the NCC-780 and NCC-781 began. XK-7GLI was scrapped, although the command cockpit "bridge" was retained and is now displayed on the grounds of Tereshkova Barracks, First Fleet Academy.

Well, slight canon issue here, most of the world was unified under the United Earth government before starships began construction. Nevertheless, interesting concept!

I imagine the UE as a loose federation of many smaller regional unions. So there is a United Earth, which includes the European Hegemony and the USSR, which in turn include contries like Germany and Russia.

Oh, I see. The countries retain their sovereignty, like in the United Nations. Still, I figured that the UE mostly stemmed from the remnants of NATO following the Eugenics Wars/WWIII (if only because I don't like the idea of communism spreading any further than it already has).

In my Polaris timeline, Gorby was successful in transforming the USSR into a multi-party democracy. Its (and Earth's) main political ideology is not communism, but Crippsian Progressivism, a synthesis of classic Western democarcy, Communist style technocracy and Terran Nationalism.

Hey, guess it's not as bad as it could have been. On that note, how do you think ol' Gorbachev responded to the Eugenics Wars? They were from '92 to '96, after all.
