I'd Highly recommend it

Its a season 3 episodeΒ calledΒ Β "Booby Trap "Β

A routine survey of an asteroid belt turns deadly for the crew of the Enterprise when they stumbledΒ on an old booby trap left for an ancient enemy...Β

Β

In fact I'd recommend all of season 3. I think its one of the best out of the whole series...Β

Well, by now I guess you would know my take on this. Love the angle, fair enough lighting (i.e. inconsistent but nobody cares anyway) and if you can tell the special effects are photoshopped, then it wasn't quite the job it could have been. Its not bad but we've seen you do better and we trust you will. I'm looking forward to it

I am and frankly I'd hope people were more critical on my work, too. After all, it is the evaluation and the criticism of the viewers that make us want to improve, not the praise, is it? But I like it how you got the asteroids to look so randomly shaped. They aren't, are they?

KaiserShipyards [2013-07-17 14:53:16 +0000 UTC]

only part of the ep i hated was they couldn't take that Alien ancient ship with them under tractor tow

then from a safe distance just overload that trap so it no longer works by firing torpedo's into it.

Very well done, friend. I have yet to see any of the ST-TNG remaster. I have season 2 of the TOS remasters and it's pretty cool.

Although I like the reamsters, I like the originals better. Yeah, plastic-and-wood ship models, but they convey the fact that back then, they knew that they could only sell the crappy SFX with great stories. Hence, the great stories

Ka-BLAM! Look out!

Amazing as always... I'm just curious, being as I don't know the first thing about 3D art, unlike you and probably most of your otherΒ watchers commenting here... how do you makeΒ these models? Do you just start from scratch and build them from thousands of little 3D shapes in a computerΒ program you use, or what? Just wondering... your ships are very beautiful!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thefirstfleet In reply to FeatherQuilt1988 [2013-07-17 21:55:15 +0000 UTC]

I am using 3DS Max. I build most of my models out of so-called primitives, that is, basic geometrical objects. I cut, deform, twist and turn them, and in the end, I have a starship. I build the textures in Photoshop, which I also use to composite the images.

Oh, I see! Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. (PS: You'reΒ very talented--I doubt I could *ever* build a whole starship that way! )

It takes massive amounts of time, and I'm still just an amateour. It took me years to get to this level, and there is loads I have to learn before I even begin to scrape the bottom of prodom.
I had an amazing teacher, , who has died last year, a great loss for me and the 3D community here on DevArt. He showed me not just the basics, but the "philosophy" behind the thing.
I also chewed through a 20 hours long tutorial video to make the Serenity from Firefly. That also taught me many tricks I am using.
But, like I said, I am far, far away from being a pro. I'm an enthusiastic amateour.

Aww, I'm sorry your mentor has passed away... I went and gave him a llama and a fave on "Sister Ships" just now. I hope they continue to keep his gallery open to inspire others, he was a really great artist... Oh, and after seeing his WIP on the Enterprise nacelles, all I can say is WOW... I have even more respect for all of you who work in 3D art now, whether you're professional or so-called "amateur" or whatever else! Soooo many lines to keep track of on the screen...

Nuclear-Fridge In reply to SpiderTrekfan616 [2013-07-17 09:04:17 +0000 UTC]

Heh. When it first aired, I shook my head. It takes the Ent-D crew something like 10 or 12 hours to figure a way out... right up to the point where the deadly radiation is about to a) deplete their power and b) microwave them alive. The "finest crew in Starfleet" takes that long to find a way out. Right. Sure.

So, I described the whole situation to my brother, who hadn't seen the show or heard anything about it. He's as much a 'Trek' fan as I am. We've also done a lot of Trek RPG over the years...

He took all of five seconds to propose the solution that takes Picard, Geordie & co. 12 hours 'on screen'. I really am not making this up!
