I'm finally off school! But now I have a job! Here's a painting I completed in the off time between the two
Funny story about this one. I had spent an evening working on this painting, when suddenly my tablet stopped working. I figured it only needed a restart so I started saving the painting and pressed the hardware reset button. Oops ... needless to say the PSD file was completely corrupted. I opened it in a hex editor and there were patches of zeros that ran for hundreds of lines. Thankfully, I had an old export I was able to paint over; Fluttershy and most of the environment was saved. It was certainly depressing repainting work I had already completed, though! Let that be a lesson to everyone to save often, and save multiple copies!
Ah well. I think it came out pretty darn well despite all the issues I had with it
(Tablet still works, thankfully, the restart fixed something!)

Ah man, forests are tough. I've really struggled with them for a long while. I don't really have much advice for you, unfortunately. It all just kinda clicked for me on this piece, I'm not sure I could even replicate it! We'll have to see if I retain any forest skillz next time I paint a scene like this.
However, I do know that I watched a ton of speed paints before I painted this. Watching someone else paint forests from the ground up really helped to gain an understanding about how they worked. So, try that, I guess!

and try to save more often! a good habit is to save habitually with a hotkey, and for every meaningful jump in completion (finishing sketch, finishing ink, finishing color, finishing shading, etc) you do a hard save with a new save file (save as) and name it accordingly. that also gives you a reference for your commissions page on how an image looks at varying degrees of detail.

Yeah, I can kinda see where you're coming from. Fluttershy is painted in a more detailed way than the rest of her environment. Instead of painterly blotches of color, she's smoothed and fully rendered. She also shines like a beacon under a B&W filter:

However, I would argue that it is necessary and in good taste to make Fluttershy so visually prominent. She's rather small on the canvas, so we have to resort to other methods in order to make her stand out and draw the eye to her. I used values and detailing to achieve this. Perhaps I'm wrong, feel free to correct me!

Oof, I'll have to keep that in mind about saving. I've forgotten to save a couple times lately, but I haven't had a file corrupt on me yet. Good thing your picture came out fine in the end though.
