Some more photos of the Faery on Flickr[link]
This is the side view of a life-sized faery sculpture. She has been created using a combination of mild steel rod and sheet steel forged into shape. Underneath the skin and clothes is a metal framework, a little like a skeleton. Steel rod was also used to make tendons to create a natural effect on the sheet steel skin.
She was built up piece by piece and welded together using a mig welder; she has not been cast.
We've named her Titania after the character in "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;
And there the snake throws her enamell'd skin,
Weed wide enough to wrap a fairy in
You'll be able to see her for real at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July 2009.

Very beautiful piece! I love the combination of forge work with the welded pieces. There are so many lovely details in this piece. I think the expression on her face really makes the piece sing.

Thank you. The wings are mostly made up of 6mm steel rod; they're pretty tough really. I'm glad they give the impression of being fragile though

Stunning piece, realy well done, beautiful detailing. Have you used a finish, or is it left to rust?

Thank you. She's been varnished and then waxoyled. She'll need to be treated with the wax at least once a year.

There are two pieces of 16mm rod on the soles of her feet going into the trunk. She balances pretty well like that.
