Fabulous, I love the blend of green and blue. In all of your macro shots, you get such great blurred backgrounds. Is that simply from your aperture setting, or are you doing something else too? I never seem to get that same effect.

theFouro In reply to r-c-p [2008-12-27 09:24:20 +0000 UTC]

It's mostly combination of using SLR and photographing the subject quite close. With normal sized flowers etc, it's important to have high aperture to get the blurred background. But with small subjects, where you need to be close to them (in macro photography) often the problem is that you have too narrow depth of field.

So basically combination of (d)SLR (aka large sensor or 35mm film), small subject and long enough macro lens means automatically narrow DoF.

You've captured some beautiful tones in an excellent manner, here; the narrow focus works brilliantly in isolating and emphasising the tones and textures of the flower itself. I'm also fond of the gradient from blue to green in the background; it matches the tone shifts in the focussed areas perfectly, which adds a lot to the composition.

Thanks. Yep, I tried to get both blue and green into background and with shallow DoF, it really blends nicely.

No worries: an' yeah, it works well to tie the piece together as an artistic composition as well as a pretty image of a flower.

This is so unique.. I love it.. I would love to know how you get the image this way ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theFouro In reply to Buble [2008-04-28 18:19:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. There's no special tricks... just a bit low lighting perhaps and then using a lens that gives you shallow depth of field. In this case, the flower was small, so when using a macro lens, I had to shoot from really close distance and when the subject is really close, DoF is really narrow.

I have a sony cyber shot camera... no seperate lens... would I be able to achieve this affect at all? there is a macro lens on it.. (not removable) but I can only get to a certain distance.. then it's out of focus... if I were to put it on manual dial.. would that help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theFouro In reply to Buble [2008-04-30 13:16:52 +0000 UTC]

No, not really. The problem is that with compact camera you just can't have shallow enough depth-of-field. This kind of effect requires SLR.

Buble In reply to theFouro [2008-04-30 14:53:28 +0000 UTC]

And so another answer brings on another question... I know Im going to sound silly.. but what is SLR?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theFouro In reply to Buble [2008-04-30 15:06:31 +0000 UTC]

Single reflex camera...basically it's those cameras where you can change the lenses. Like Canon 400D, 40D etc and Nikon D40, D80 and so on (well, they're digital SLR's).

[link] I think this article explains something about it.

But with dSLR, in general, you can have better image quality, more control over the camera and change the lenses so you'll have right lens for the right job (like macro lens for macro photography and wide angle for landscapes and so on).

theFouro In reply to Buble [2008-04-30 18:21:36 +0000 UTC]

Yep, the image looks like normal compact camera photo. [link] This is a bit similar, with (relatively cheap) 50mm f1.8 les. But happy to help, if you have any questions, I can try to answer.

My lens is a carl zeiss and it reads... 2,8-3,7/6-72I guess you may have an idea what this implies? Im very appreciative of you kind help and advice.. and will surely call on you again should I need some help .. thanks!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theFouro In reply to Buble [2008-05-01 14:11:12 +0000 UTC]

The lens itself isn't there the most important thing in your case, since it's compact camera. Mostly it would matter in the case of sSLR.

theFouro In reply to MaxiiLS [2008-04-28 16:05:07 +0000 UTC]

Easy, just get a macro lens and shoot from close distances and you'll get such DoF.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxiiLS In reply to theFouro [2008-04-29 22:59:50 +0000 UTC]

I do use macro lense (well add-on thingy) but I have mis-understood the DoF thing (again) so was using F11. Pink was my first attempt at reducing the DoF down to acquire something like your Spring Blues....I think Im going in the right direction now.

More practise....

theFouro In reply to MaxiiLS [2008-04-30 05:58:35 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's just the other way around.

Though you can't get as shallow depth of field with compact camera, so it will be a problem. Probably you just can't get it that shallow as in Spring Blues without using dSLR and macro lens.

The reason is that the sensor in compact camera is just so much smaller, so basically the real focal lengths you are using are quite short, since the lens needs to draw only quite small image for the sensor (even though they give same field-of-view as longer focal lengths in dSLR).

Also depth of field in macro photography is sometimes difficult to control well enough. With macro lens and really short focusing distances you might end up having really important areas of the flower being out of focus and it would easily look like careless photo.
