The thing is, something my friend talked to me about, that Zack was the perfect character. He had no flaws and was the closest thing to perfection that a character design would be. To allow him to live would distract from the story line and make the rest of the characters seem too flawed.

That's not agreeing with me. I would've liked to let him live. You call him perfect, but he was flawed as well. Always second guessing himself, always unsure of himself, even when he seemed cocky, doubt plagued him on every turn. If he could protect Cloud, if he could live up to Angeal's legacy with the Buster Sword, if he could be a good boyfriend to Aerith(Aeris, whichever version you want to call her). He doubted everything about himself through the whole game, especially when he was betrayed by almost everyone he knew but most of the Turks, Cloud, Aerith and few select others.
The only ideal (perfect) thing about him was his loyalty to his friends and his dedication to being a hero and even then, in the end he had to ask if he was one, thinking he had failed because he died and pushed everything onto Cloud.
That's why I would have liked to see him live. To see that if he had gone past even the worst the injuries, if he could have become a hero with Cloud and Aerith at his side, to keep the promises he made. Only fanfic can ever tell that story.
