Description
Justice Batter woke up and looked around frantically before calming down as he realized he was in a hospital.
He began moving before grunting in pain. Clearly he was far more banged up than he had thought. So he forced himself into a sitting position.
With that he began to look around the room. Lucky for him he found his jacket and bat sitting neatly on the nearby dresser. A door to his left led out to the main hall while a door to his right was ajar. Probably was a closet or bathroom.
And so as he sat he began to think about the situation he was in. First question was who found him?
Probably one of the heroes. If that was the case he didn’t have anything to worry about. He’d rest up and get on out of here. But what if one of the enemies brought him. That would be far from good. If they brought him to the hospital they would know his identity implying they would try black mailing him.
The second question he pondered was why did they try robbing the Infernal Research building? What were they looking for? Did they have any relation to the monster attack or was it simply a villian taking advantage of the chaos?
“Pierce. Are you there?” He heard as he was shaken gently.
Broken from his thoughts he found his mother crying in relief while his father let out a sigh of relief. “You are okay. Thank goodness. When we heard you were caught up in an earthquake....well we thought we lost you.”
“I am tough. It will take more than that to kill me of all people.” He reassured them while flexing playfully.
His father ruffled his hair and chuckled, “You could show the heroes and villains a thing or two.”
“It is dangerous though. You aren’t as strong as them. They have powers like flying or super speed or something.” His mother retorted in concern.
“I know. I know. Though dang if they aren’t cool.” He laughed.
“I must say I am nervous though. It is bad enough you wear the same jacket a hero wears. What if you are mistaken for him?”
“Dear, he is a young man who loves heroes and baseball. When a baseball themed hero shows up one day of course Pierce would idolize him.” His father responded in Pierce’s defense.
Feeling a bit bad for his parents he changed the subject, “So did I get any homework?”
“Oh yes. Miss Owalts brought it a few hours ago when your teachers learned you would be here for a week.”
“A whole week?” He asked in surprise.
“Yes. Something about wanting to make sure there is no internal damage they have yet to notice. You did fall about thirty feet.”
“Makes sense.” He replied to them though to the young hero it didn’t. Though he wasn’t very durable he could easily shake off long falls and had fallen further than that.
They talked for a few hours before returning home so he could rest up a bit.
Opening his Math book he raised an eye while finding a sheet of paper neatly folded inside. Unfolding it he found a note though it wasn’t any handwriting he recognized.
“Greetings young man. I heard you were in quite the fight.
Thanks to your actions we managed to get our hands on a few of the replicants.
Sadly all but one took their life. The last one tried but we managed to stabilize him. He is currently in the same hospital you are in.
He will be moved in a week and we are certain someone will try to kill him. That is why we pulled some strings and got you to stay there. You are to stay here undercover and observe things from the inside.
Nothing can teleport in and I doubt they’ll go in guns blazing since the Golden Hero and I are nearby.
Your part could help us finally get an edge over the Nero Agency and save millions of people.
If you don’t want to do this you can call me at the number I’ve included at the bottom of the letter. No one will judge you if you do this as this could become quite the dangerous job and you are barely eighteen.
All the best,
Countdown”
He reread the last part multiple times. He could barely contain his excitement at that. He was finally getting his big break and from Countdown no less. If he pulled this off he wouldn’t be put on perimeter duty again. He’d be in the middle of the fights helping people.
Getting up with a grunt he put his jacket on with slight difficulty. He left his bat knowing it would only create too many problems for him.
He needed to patrol the area. See what he had to work with and make some plans. Maybe find an ally or two.
As he explored he found himself at the kid’s section of the hospital and an idea formed in his head.
If he contacted one of them as Justice Batter he could have them help him. Nothing dangerous. Just have one or two be on the look out for anything suspicious like new doctors or nurses.
That would be a big help to him. He just needed a way for them to report to him.
Perhaps a dead drop or two?
Where to have it though? Perhaps on the floor. Perhaps a trash can? No. That was asking for the notes to be thrown away. He would find a real spot at some point but for now it was all good.
Continuing his exploration he found two officers sitting outside of a room. Probably where they were keeping the villain. Directly in the middle of the hospital. Also a four mile walk from his room.
That was further than he hoped. He’d definitely need help from a kid or two as they were much closer. Plus if he asked them questions he’d be viewed as suspicious while the kids would just be viewed as curious or nosy.
Having a bit of a plan going he passed the guards. He made a mental note to get a list of all the guards though he’d probably have to convince a nurse to get him it. He could bribe one and that would get him the information while also warning him about who could be bought off.
Heading downstairs he made his way to the cafeteria counting the public entrances. Four visible entrances. One North, East, South, and West. There were probably a few employee entrances as well that he would have to find.
And then it dawned on him. He could just tell the kids to give the information to the guy wearing a Justice Batter jacket named Pierce.
That would be enough for him to do for his first day. He’d come up with more tomorrow. For now he had work to do.
