This is my attempt at worldbuilding.

If this isn't explanatory enough or you can't read my shitty handwriting (why are you even reading this comic?) then here's a summary.

Humans and Pokemon are different. Pokemon get stronger by defeating Pokemon. When a human uses a Pokemon to defeat a Pokemon, they feel awesome because humans love winning and that feeling spreads to the trainer's Pokemon, making the Pokemon get stronger faster.

Humans love beating other humans even more, and that makes the Pokemon even stronger (which is why Pokemon get more exp from trainer battles). This leads to a symbiotic relationship where Pokemon basically have guaranteed survival by being raised by a trainer (who isn't a Nuzlocker) and the trainer gets all of the fame and glory and euphoria for beating other trainers.

Yeah, I know. I could've just put "NERD" in big white letters, because I probably overthought this more than Satoshi Tajiri did.
