Description
One of the most well-known and documented cases of exorcism is that of Anneliese Michel, a young German woman who underwent a series of exorcisms in the 1970s. Michel was born in 1952 and had a history of mental illness, including epilepsy and depression. In 1973, Michel experienced a seizure while praying and began exhibiting symptoms of possession, including speaking in multiple voices, self-injury, and aversion to religious objects. Her family and local priests believed that she was possessed by demons and sought to have her exorcised.
Over the course of the next year, Michel underwent a series of 67 exorcisms, during which she was restrained, denied food and water, and subjected to physical abuse in an attempt to expel the demons. She died on July 1, 1976, from malnutrition and dehydration, weighing only 68 pounds at the time of her death.
The case of Anneliese Michel has been the subject of numerous books and documentaries, and has sparked debate and controversy about the use of exorcism in cases of mental illness and the responsibility of religious authorities and medical professionals in cases of suspected possession.
