Description
I literally just stumbled across this on Myspace when I got a friend request from the owner-- here's a commission I did of The Darkness from Top Cow while at Megacon 2009.I have an entertaining tale about this piece-- just as I was finishing up this while sitting at my table, I heard a loud voice come over the loud speakers on the con floor:
' Come to Room 225 (or whatever it was) right now for a panel on INDY COMICS hosted by Tom Cronin and featuring our special guests Layne & Perry Toth, Greg Williams, Thom Zahler, Robert Venditti and JEREMY DALE ! '
So I have a small gathering already at my table waiting to talk to me/get a sketch/get something signed/etc and I'm like, " Hold on-- was that my name?"
I take a look at my wife Kelly, who proceeds to dart off like lightning to investigate as I handle the fans at my table. Not even twenty seconds later, a guy with a clipboard comes by my table, inquiring, "Are you Jeremy Dale?"
"Uh... Yes, I am. How can I help y--"
"Did you know you're on a panel in Room whateveritwas in a minute?"
"I did not know that-- Uh... where is that exactly?"
"Room 22whateveritwas--"
"No, like where are the panel rooms?"
"Just out the door on your right-- you can't miss 'em."
"Thanks!"
After a hasty apology to my waiting audience and a quick beg to my super-awesome Canadian table neighbors and to pleeeeeeeeeeeez watch my table, I was off into the masses of cosplayers to find my way to the panel room.
As I stumbled up on stage, I was... relieved? to have been the second panelist to arrive. Plopping down into my chair, I looked out over the small audience and gasped, "Yeah, sorry-- just found out this was happening."
A small chuckle and a great panel later, I left quite pleased with how it all turned out.
Unfortunately, the gent that commissioned the above "Darkness morphing his hands into a gun kinda like Dirty Harry" piece picked it up before I got back, so I missed out on whether he liked it or not...
... until now! I just received word he loved it, and it's displayed on his Myspace page gallery of artwork.
Sorry I don't have a great scan of it-- in time, I hope I will.

Thanks, Dan! Really glad you enjoy it-- I was trying to stay true to the character (and in a limited time frame with little reference, since it was done at a convention).

In general, I work using a lightbox in the studio, so construction lines on the paper are reduced to nil. At shows, though-- like the piece here? I got LUCKY. I used my electric eraser a lot, and pencilled as lightly as I could before setting down the final lines.
Thanks for the kind words!
