As you know I recently did a Paintover of the GHOST IN THE SHELL image, didn't feel it was good enough, so here goes again. This time I tried photobashing to achieve the more realistic look. People care because it's hard to imagine a character named Motoko Kusanagi being played by Scarlet Johanson. If the character is japanese, why not get a japanese actress? Personally, I'd like to see Rinko Kikuchi in the role. I think that would be cool. I'm gonna parrot a line that a lot of people say regarding this topic. If the film makers wanted to make a movie starring white actresses, why couldn't they have made an original film, rather than changing an already established franchise?

Yeah, people were angry about that. If they do it right, i'd be all for it. But i know they don't understand, it's just eyes that makes a person asian, it's an entire skull structure. So if they just do something dumb like just the eyes, it'll just look really racist.Β

it wont look "racist". Itll look dumb/weird/disturbing. Eyes r the most apparent and focus-drawing part of the face. And manga style doesnt depict asianness - anime characters dont have squinty eyes and japs dont allow themselves to make a character thats not at least partially from the "great nippon".
So the character doesnt look asian and has a japanese name, cuz there hardly is an alternative

motoko to me doesn't looks asian like to be incarnated by an asian actress,Β
her face in drawings and her japanese name it's the same to the movie, they don't fit... i was angry to the white washing too but when you look at american girls cosplaying as motoko you realize that the distinctive seal of the character it's her hairstyle and her clothes more than her face...
