I think the thing he did with the two hands was more of a compassion thing to offset his words about Sam being the boy with the demon blood. He was letting Sam know he knew about him, but that he wasn't angry or disgusted, and he wasn't going to smite him without cause. That was my impression of the scene anyway. And I agree that it was sweet.
