Hi, could I ask a question? It's probably a bit of a silly one, but I have problems with it. When you model eyes and eyelids, how do you do them? Because when I do it, there's always a gap between the eyeball and the eye socket and I'm not sure how to stop that happening.

Eyelids are a pain in the byootox so don't get discouraged if you're having trouble. First thing I learned that improved my eyelids pretty quick was to make sure to not underestimate how thick an eyelid can be; they're thicker than you might think so don't neglect that! Now I'm a self-taught modeler with a more old-fashioned approach of polygon modeling instead of sculpting in like zbrush or mudbox so my modeling process tends to be a bit unorthodox. You can try what I do and start with a cylinder and delete the cap ends. Use the remaining ring vertices on one end to shape your eye around a sphere (eyeball) and the other end to start forming the actual skin that leads into the brows and rest of the face. Really focus on getting that shape right, don't forget to check all your angles from the side and top so that the opening to the eye follows the round of the rest of the face, otherwise the area around the face or "raccoon mask" as I call it, gets too flat looking. When you have the shape of the eye you want, extrude your edges inward toward the eyeball and no worries if they intersect the sphere itself. Just make sure the eyelid isn't paper thin! On Hal I actually closed the eye sockets which I find helps a little to reinforce the structure of the lids but that's all up to you. I hope this mess of text helps and good luck!

woow this is beautiful love your gallery...... just wanted to know how you became a great 3d artist, it's kinda my dream to become one and i was just wondering how you learned how to do this and where you started at the moment in using blender mainly because it is free please give me some advice it would make my day and hopefully ill continue my journey towards becoming a 3d artist!

Glad you like my stuff. I guess my best piece of advice is don't worry so much about the software. If you want to learn tools, there are always plenty of tutorials on how to do all sorts of cool stuff online. If you're not sure how to start, just google what you want to do and before you know it, you'll be doing it better than the tutorial you learned it from. Also, instead of just specializing in one thing like modeling or animation, try to learn everything you can about computer graphics in general. I started with making little models of video game or cartoon characters with simple shapes. Try to take your project through an entire pipeline from concept to finish animated and rendered shot. You'll learn so much more by doing everything and as you learn the different parts of the pipeline, you'll start to find which part enjoy most and specialize from there; only now you have a solid understanding of the working pipeline around your discipline which in turn makes you a better team player and valuable asset to a studio environment. Hope that helps and good luck!

Thankyou for the awesome advice!!! so how long do you think it would take to become a reasonable 3D artist by doing learning all the principles of animation... how long did it take you to get to where you are now? And also just wondering how long it takes you to complete a protect like a model ect...

All depends on how much you're willing to work for it. Hal took me about a week to model and another week to paint/shade. Although I experimented with new workflows and designs in the process which is always great for learning but never as direct nor fast as just doing what you currently know how to do.

Reference>Draw**>Research>Model>Paint/Sculpt>Shade>Rig>Animate>Cache>Render>Composite>Wash>Rise>Repeat

**In my case, occasionally have a friend draw something because I can't draw too well.

may i suggest, a male and female as two friends. Female long blonde hair, with blue eyes. Male with short black hair and brown eyes. i was thinking to give the other characters and your current character go verity, with in your amazing style of course. Male friend taller than your current character and the female shorter than the current character. Don't know if that would be any help?

Actually his best friend is an old giant horned sea turtle since no one else really talks to him due to his frequent screw ups when trying to invent things and his worst enemy is his school teacher who is this old hag in a steam powered wheel chair accompanied by a flat faced fat frizzy feline (alliteration win) with one eye due to one of his inventing accidents. To make matters worse he has a big crush on the old hag teacher's granddaughter who's a few years older than he is.

I think that just might cover a little more variety than a couple of eye colors and hair lengths.
