Description
Because in a perfect world, this would've happened.I absolutely ADORE these two as a couple, and I wish that the writers would've allowed Andrew J. Robinson and Alexander Siddig to pursue it, but they said no, because Star Trek needed to remain family friendly. 3
I found a quote from Andrew Robinson himself, that I think summed up their decision quite nicely:
"I started out playing Garak as someone who doesn’t have a defined sexuality. He’s not gay, he’s not straight, it’s a non-issue for him. Basically his sexuality is inclusive. But—it’s Star Trek and there were a couple of things working against that. One is that Americans really are very nervous about sexual ambiguity. Also, this is a family show, they have to keep it on the “straight and narrow”, so then I backed off from it. Originally, in that very first episode, I loved the man’s absolute fearlessness about presenting himself to an attractive human being. The fact that the attractive human being is a man (Bashir) doesn’t make any difference to him, but that was a little too sophisticated I think."
I haven't finished DS9 yet, but I do know that Garak leaves for Cardassia in the end. The pose on the bottom right is how I imagined Garak's farewell to Bashir, saying something like "You will be fine without me, Doctor."
For some reason, it means a lot to me to post this piece. This will be the first gay art piece I have drawn/submitted, and I'm really proud of that. It's a personal victory for me I guess, because a year or 2 ago, I would've told you I was against homosexuality, calling it a sin and such rubbish like that. *shakes head* but not anymore.
Anyways, love to all.
Bashir and Garak belong to the creators of Star Trek: Deep Space 9
