Description
So I am finally getting these commissions done that I was able to take home from the Big Apple Con. I was made aware that they are going to be sent to CGC to be graded, so I am trying to make sure this guy is happy, for a multitude of reasons. I was paid for 5 commissions to draw on these Marvel Project covers (one being a Disney Comic blank cover) and was allowed to take them home, and since it's taking me so long (working with kids is draining, gotta throw that out there since this is my first time working this hard!) I have to make sure that I am, giving my costumer what he paid for and at least a bit more, so each one of these will have something extra added to them. The first the 5 on deck is Spider-man and Venom. I figured why not add a silhouetted background and moon to help establish some mood and lighting as well as make this image a bit more interesting. Oh, and this is Eddy Brock, I have not drawn this character since the McFarlane and Larsen days (well, once, but that don't count) so thats what I am use to for the sake of speed.....
.....it's been extremely interesting drawing on this cover. The paper is cardstock, but it's not really forgiving if you draw too dark, so using a 4h lead helps to get things dark if I want to but keeps things extremely light and soft as well.
THIS is what full pencils from me looks like right now! I am proud to post this, and look forward to the learning I'll do from one piece to the next=]

i feel u. but dont use that as an excuse lol. i do some finished art by hand at that size, so i know whats kinda possible to get outta the tools. its just the head really. and a lil proper shading/lighting would add a lot of mood to it. i think thats really more key than the anatomy etc. it owuld make it more dynamic. they look like theyre just chillin there. not illin.

that aspect of it, the action and what not, is something i am really trying to work on.... I hope that the next one is a lot more dynamic!

Sorry for the spam, but:
Venom could use a longer head as well, but I don't think it's as noticeable. But if you think about it, Venom has that huge gaping exaggerated mouth, so his head should be preternaturally long.

Oh yeah, and again--Spidey needs a longer head. I think you're better off making the head a bit too long than too short. Study carefully how large a person's chin is, and how much space there is between the nose and upper lip. I think people underestimate these things.
God, I need to draw again. What use are my observations if I don't put any of them into use for myself? -_-

I don't get why you think the head needs to be longer, he'd end up looking like a bobble head. He's looking downward. This one is pretty proportionate. The problem I think after looking at it again is his eyes may be a bit too low, but in terms of size, I don't see the problem.

On second look, I see a moon (way over-done, no offense), so I guess you can ignore the artificial light comment. Nonetheless, the light source is very unclear. Are they lit by moonlight? Lights from the city?

What makes it overdone? Most moon drawings are usually very detailed, and remember, the pencils lead to the inks and then colors, all getting hints of what and where lighting and texture should be from the pencils, so the final product doesn't necessarily need to be the exact same. Look at how colorists are doing a lot of work with color holds, turning blacks into dark colors for shadows. Thats more of what I am trying to go for.

Looking at it carefully, the shading IS funky. But I had to look for it after LordoftheBling's post. Look at it for yourself. Based on the shadows, where IS the light coming from? Also, with the heavy shadows, it looks like it might be night-time with artificial lighting. Natural lighting wouldn't cause such dramatic shadows.

the lighting is coming from above and over from the left. with the light of the moon, they would have to have a rim light effect (i don't know hot to refer to it). but i am assuming they're in the city, so there's going to be a lot of lighting anyway. There are always building lights as well as street lights that make for enough shadows.

I like this, but the only problem I have with this is Spidey's head. It seems a tad too small or maybe he's trying to tuck his chin in way too far.

don't you think his head would look more cartoonish if his head were bigger?

Possibly. I just think it could be slightly bigger.

I'd probably like when I'm thinking I finally have the perfect art for my tatoo. I wouldn't go for it cuz I'm so damn perfectionist. Heck I even have some really cool sketchbooks I haven't used just for the same reason.
CONGRATS anyways
