Description
did a really cool version of Superman that I got a chance to color. It was interesting seeing how my colors would play over someone else's direction. It was daunting, but then again, it was my first time laying colors over someone else.I might have to do this again=]
pencils for this image here [link]
Edit: so the outpouring of support and comments about my first try at coloring someone elses work has been so phenomenal and beautiful and I thank you all for it! I've made some changes, adding more of a yellow hue to the background, blurring the entire background and then the middle ground i blurred even more and heightened the saturation of Kal-el's costume..... it definitely helps to pop him out I think, thanks everyone who has taken the time to help me out!

Great Colour work, the clouds reflected inthe buildings windows is a nice touch. I would say however the speed line colour youve done seems a little dark and frames supes somewhat. Id go for a Light Motion blur with soft edges just so its not too distracting from the scene. but over all awesome colours dude

when you say a light motion blur with soft edges, could you get a bit more descriptive with what that means (Not too familiar with blurs)

ah ok, no probs. when you've got the selected mask area you want to blur, I'd command click or right click (if your using mac or pc!) and feather the edges of the masked area slightly (4-5 value or more if you want a wider ans softer gradient feather) then add your motion blur from filters blur menu in the direction he's travelling.. and maybe on a separate layer underneath the blur add a very very light shade of white, maybe 15% opacity and fill... may look ok but just an idea. have a mess around

i did most of what you said, but the white layer at 15 %, I'll go try that too=] thanks!

Mmmmmm there's nothing wrong with this at all!!! I love the blurring effect in which I assume is to emphasise "speed" and at the same time gives a focusing effect (very much like a human eye) on superman himself. That clearly enhances the perspective in which thefranchize himself originally intended when he made this brilliant artwork. I also did the same with my recent work [link] in which I was experimenting with the blur effect trying to enhance the visual perspective.
Brilliant colour work and effects man!!! Your collab work is a success!!!!

thanks a lot for the vote of confidence=] I must admit, I am not too familiar with making blurs work, so it MAY be off, but then again, it may not be:-D All I can do is keep practicing to perfect it=] Thanks for the comment and the vote of confidence!

not bad...overall very good
however the blur needs work im caught between not liking it and seeing how it does work but at the same time my eyes almost want to say supes has been cut out and pasted over the background as opposed to being part of the overall scene (i call it spacial scaling or distancing ) soo it kinda gives it a 2d , 3d issue

do you think maybe the blur needs to be taken out? I saved this blurred version as a separate file just in case it didn't work.....

see technically i can comphrend the blur but like
1. issue is that the cape above supes body isnt blurring ->on the left side of the image above the shoulder
2. theres some yellowish bleed over into supes suit on the right hand side of the image(his raised left fist)
- ya know really if i step back and look at it i can see it for what it is as an image with the idea that supes is racing towards me (i.e camera) and is about to hit me very hard , very fast soooo maybe there should be some sorta streak effect coming from the right fist, but i would reduce the blur effect and maybe use a different kind of blur effect (what did you use)
3. its still great colors and style that makes it stand out with meticulous details and very vibrant coloring

to defend the blur, I tried to only blur what was below his upper body, so thats why his arms and cape above him isn't blurred.

naa man its a good idea
but looking at it i just can help but think maybe if it were a solid streak from beneath or more isolated it might work better -
and as for the cape i was thinking heavily in physics (too much for my own good considering i barely passed just the basics) but since supes is moooving soooo fast so is everything attached to him .. if he just jumped into action the cape would lag behind still moving even if part of him stopped however if sudden enough (suggested by your piece here) i can definately see that scenario with the cape working out to the puffling of a section n what not

thelearningcurv In reply to a1984niceguy [2009-07-24 03:30:52 +0000 UTC]
yea i thought about the solid streak too, but then you'd loose the cool buildings and art that jerry did.....
I hear you with the physics.... nothin I can do about that though lol

a1984niceguy In reply to thelearningcurv [2009-07-25 18:27:55 +0000 UTC]
naa not a solid streak a mid to high transparency red streak similar to a
jolly rancher cherry red plasta candy wraper - what i meant by solid was that
the blur would be soo fuzzy and done via brush :-p and yurp
the transparency would permit the buildings to remain as is via seperate layers
