lol, now that you mention it your right there are a lot of similarities.
Can't say it was intentional, but Fullmetal Alchemist is an awesome series. May have subconsciously went in that direction. White and purple hair tend to match up well with darker skin and you tend to find darker skin in more southern areas.

It might also be a joke on the idea that every ethnicity looks homogeneous to those who are unfamiliar with them. (e.g. white folks say that black folks look alike, while black folks say that white folks look alike)
