Since this ability works primarily through life magic, the creature has to be classified as a physically living thing in order to have a life essence, so if its soul is in a non-living shell like a golem, dragonflight cannot read it. The body itself has to be a living thing.
Cyborgs should be fine because they tend to be part living and part mechanical, and still retain many physically alive parts.
I tend to classify demons as artificial because in my eyes demons are created as an artificial vessel for souls in the afterlife using dark magic. Creatures that are only part demon, or demons that work differently in someone else's lore and are classified as living would still be able to be read.

Hahaha I just got out of finals hell just now.
The dress is fantastic for one, her hair feels lighter and foofier(like it bounces with every step kinda foof), and both her tail and wings(especially the tail) fit very nicely with the rest of the design, feeling as though they "belong there" as opposed to being tacked on. It's really nice! Great job!
